Council Vacancies

There are Councillor vacancies on the Parish Council. If you’re interested in getting involved please write to the Parish Clerk, giving some details about yourself.

To be nominated to stand, or to be co-opted, as a Parish Councillor, a nominee must be over 18 years of age (18 is the voting age) and at least one of the following -

  • You are, and will continue to be, registered as a local government elector for the parish in which you wish to stand,
  • you have occupied, as owner or tenant, any land or premesis in the village, or within 3 miles of it, for at least 12 months prior to election,
  • your main or only place of work for the 12 months prior to election has been within the parish area,
  • you have lived in the parish, or within 3 miles of it, for the whole of the 12 months prior to the day of nomination.

In addition, you must NOT be registered bankrupt or have been convicted and received a prison sentence (or suspended sentence) of three months or more in the previous five years before the election.

The Local Government Disqualification Act 2022 came into effect on 28 June 2022. The Act disqualifies individuals subject to certain sexual offence legal orders from standing for election or holding office in local authorities.

Voter ID requirement

From 4 May 2023, voters in England will need to show photo ID to vote at polling stations in some elections.

This will apply to:

  • Local elections
  • Police and Crime Commissioner elections
  • UK parliamentary by-elections
  • Recall petitions

From October 2023 it will also apply to UK General elections.

If you don't have accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a Voter Authority Certificate.

After an Election

Following an Election, the elected members must meet within 14 days of an election, sign Declaration of Office forms and elect a Chairman. A Vice Chairman may also be elected. For 2023 - 2024, this meeting ( the Annual Parish Council Meeting ) took place on Wednesday 17th May.

The Parish Council meets monthly, usually on the 3rd Wednesday unless it falls on a Bank Holiday. Washingbrough Parish Council has 1 defined committee (Finance & General Purposes) and may create other committees or a working party from time to time for special purposes.
